One unique aspect to the CIRLA Fellows program is participation
in an extensive and comprehensive mentoring program . Each CIRLA library
has designated one librarian as a primary mentor for the Fellows working
in that library.
Mentoring gives Fellows the ability to:
-
Network with highly respected and influential leaders in research
libraries.
-
Receive on-the-job mentoring, coaching and support to learn about
the job and the library, and to assist you in navigating your path
within the profession.
-
Receive ARL training on diversity and other issues that affect
or impact research libraries today.
-
Receive career and job seeking counseling including interview
skills, resume-building techniques, and identifying career opportunities.
-
Develop professional relationships with librarians and other
professionals across all areas of the library who can inspire,
affect and help shape your future library career.
Mentor Training
Mentors will receive training from the Association
of Research Libraries, Office of Leadership & Management Services
(ARL/OMS) on how to build and develop successful mentor relationships.
The Effective Mentorship Seminar is a one-day event for the mentors
who have been selected from the participating libraries. The seminar
covers the principles and practices needed for creating and sustaining
an effective mentoring relationship. The curriculum has been designed
specifically for the CIRLA Fellows Program, and will be delivered by
ARL/OLMS faculty with experience managing local and national mentoring
programs.
Protégé Training
Fellows will also participate in a formal training session provided
by ARL to learn how to develop the mentor relationship from the point-of-view
of the protégé. The same skills, techniques and communications
are necessary for a successful relationship that can enhance the learning
experiences of the Fellow and bring value to the library.
