Employment is a critical component of the program. All
Fellows, those enrolled full-time in library school, and those enrolled
working full-time in a CIRLA library while attending library school
as part-time students, will share in the work experiences of the program.
The work experiences are designed to provide the Fellows
with a broad-based, experiential program. To do this, a Work Curriculum
has been created to expose the Fellows to a variety of meaningful projects
and/or professional library work settings, matching the Fellows' interests
to library needs. The Work Curriculum consists of four core rotations
(approximately four months each), followed by two elective rotations
customized to match your specific career objectives.
The Work Curriculum will:
-
Introduce you to all types of library environments and give you
broad base of work experiences while exposing you to a wide variety
of career possibilities.
-
Enable you to create your own customized work-learning experiences
in almost any area of research librarianship that matches your
skills and interests.
-
Allow you to select the CIRLA Library of your choice to help
you get the most out of your work experience during the Fellowship.
Core Employment Curriculum:
-
Each Fellow will develop hands-on experience in these four core
areas of librarianship:
-
Reference/Public Services
-
Cataloging/Metadata/Technical Services
-
Acquisitions/Collection Development
-
Digital Initiatives, Technologies or Systems
Elective Employment Curriculum:
Following completion of the core experiences, you will only be limited
by your imagination to custom design two more work experiences that
best match the type of work settings and situations that best meet
your career objectives.
Examples include:
-
Library Administration and Management
-
Professional Staff Development & Training
-
Archival Studies
-
